Little Boxes
This project arose incidentally while I photographed in the city of Tijuana and its surrounding suburbs for Occidente Nuevo. The cross-border movement of building materials and small American tract homes has also influenced new housing design south of the US-Mexico border. Tijuana’s new suburban developments are constructed using “tiny box” architecture surprisingly reminiscent of post-World War II era planned communities in the U.S. The structures are both functional and sculptural against the stark Mexican landscape.
